But I also found a source for the article screenshotted above! And folks it’s WILD. It’s an incredibly interesting read if you happen to love hearing about niche hobby drama. It’s also just a fantastically written article!

The parts I find the most interesting are about how conservative the cat fanciers association is. This isn’t even all of the parts that talk about that.

People are so mad about this cat spefically because he has female colors. An animal who couldn’t choose how it was born. This is happening in Texas by the way. Hm. I wonder how they treat trans people over there?

Tell me a soft memory

My oldest brother is 10 years older than me.

When I was in first grade, he took me shopping for new school clothes — which was huge because, as the youngest of six kids, I lived in hand-me-downs.

He bought me a little navy blue, polka dot dress with a Peter Pan collar and red alphabet buttons. But, on picture day, I lost one of the buttons on the playground. I had a total meltdown because my brother spent his own money to make sure I had this new dress and I ruined it. I was a mess, totally inconsolable.

My teacher was also the mom of one of my brother’s best friends. She told him, and he, my brother and the entire football team searched the playground after practice for my lost button. Which they actually found.

My brother sewed the button back on himself in the car all while trying to explain that he wouldn’t have been mad even if I did lose it.

It was just a button and a dress.

But I did have one of those little red alphabet buttons sewn into my wedding dress.

that last line got me to tears, sobbing

Another GREAT reason to keep your cats indoors where they belong!

To the people invariably about to say the stupidest f*cking sh*t like "oh but a fully grown cat is bigger and could take that bird down" HELLO?? do you even hear yourselves? Do you think that will happen without injury to the cat? Do you know how AWFUL deep puncture wounds feel, how terrible they are to treat, how expensive the vet visit would be if the cat even survives? Do you not give a sh*t that your cat would be killing a threatened or endangered bird of prey species? Because it's definitely killing even if the bird gets away, it will go down to a p. multocida infection from your cats claws later if it doesn't die outright.

Anyway keep your cats inside. Yes even in the city. Yes even in the suburbs. Yes even if you think "there's no predators" because a) there's never no predators and b) predators are still only ONE of MANY reasons to do it.

NO, it f*cking DOES NOT depend on your situation. Thank you for adding to my blocklist, I don't care to interact with anyone who would knowingly and willingly endanger cats by letting them outdoors unsupervised to be potentially injured or brutally killed. YOUR inability to properly care for a cat indoors doesn't justify it.

Every time I'm out on a bike ride and see a dead cat on the side of the road or I see the remains of a cat carcass in the woods or I see one of the many missing cat signs, I remind myself: "Ah, this cat belonged to a 'cat lover'"

You know, those people that say they love their cats so much and that their cat must be outside for proper enrichment. I'm sure that cat laying beside the curb, full of maggots and flies, feels so loved compared to the indoor cat that is warm, safe, fed, and free of infection and parasites.

I've learned that you can't take the "cats destroy the ecosystem!" angle with outdoor cat lovers because they simply don't care and they will tell you that right to your face. Long as their cat is fine they don't care. But what baffles me is that they also don't care about their pet either. If their cat gets brutally torn to ribbons by raccoons or a coyote they just... go to the shelter and adopt another one. Oh, after mourning the loss of their cat as a "tragic accident" of course.

There is a reason why our local cat shelter will permanently blacklist you if you so much as mention the word "outdoor" when discussing a cat adoption.
