The Hydrosocial Cycle in Coastal Tourist Destinations in Alicante, Spain: Increasing Resilience to Drought
Carlos Baños
Tourism, and particularly residential tourism, has led to a change in the urban and demographic model of towns along the European Mediterranean coastline. Water as a resource limited and limiting for the growth of tourism is a popular topic in the scientific literature. However, the incorporation of non-conventional resources (desalination) has meant, in theory, that this limitation has been overcome. The aims of this paper are: (a) to identify the different tourism models existing in coastal towns in Alicante province and characterize them according to their water consumption from 2002–2017; and (b) analyse the hydrosocial cycle, highlighting the measures aimed at satisfying water demand and identifying the limitations related to these hydrosocial systems. To this end, different types of information have been processed, and various basic indicators have been analysed. The results revealed the increase in the resilience of this region to natural aridity and drought events. This was ...

Tourism, and particularly residential tourism, has led to a change in the urban and demographic model of towns along the European Mediterranean coastline. Water as a limited and limiting resource for the growth of tourism is a popular topic in the scientific literature. However, the incorporation of non-conventional resources (desalination) has meant, in theory, that this limitation has been overcome. The aims of this paper are: a) to identify the different tourism models implanted in this territory and describe them from the point of view of their consumption of water in the demand cycle from 2002 to 2017; b) analyse the hydrosocial cycle, highlighting the measures aimed at satisfying water demand; and c) identify the limitations associated with these hydrosocial systems. To this end, different types of information will be processed, and various complex indicators produced. The results show the importance that demand management and the use of desalinated water in increasing the res...

PENSIONERS’ COAST MIGRATION OF ELDERLY NORTH EUROPEANS TO THE COSTA BLANCA
joan carles membrado
This paper investigates the cross-border migration of North European retirees to the Costa Blanca and its infl uence on the urban expansion of resorts. We also discuss the reasons for these migrations, which are mainly related to climate and lifestyle, and we explore the pros and cons and impact on the Costa Blanca landscape and environment.

Urban Sprawl and Northern European Residential Tourism in the Spanish Mediterranean Coast
2017 •
joan carles membrado, Raquel Huete
Residential tourism from Northern European countries has influenced the process of urban development in the Spanish Mediterranean coast. We explain the recent urban growth in Spain (or " Spanish house bubble ") and then show the main characteristics of the influx of citizens from other European countries richer than Spain, especially into the Spanish Mediterranean coast and specifically into the Costa Blanca region. Finally we demonstrate the relationship between the development of residential tourism and the growth of urban sprawl in the Spanish Mediterranean coast and we analyze some of its consequences for the region.

Urbanization processes along the Mediterranean coast of Alicante province
Pablo Martí Ciriquián
The rate of land consumption in the coastal area of Alicante has been over the last decades, one of the highest among all Spanish Mediterranean provinces. This new territorial tendency has involved important changes in the use of land and has led to a new spatial and functional reality. The objective of this paper is to address two specific concerns related to the identification and characterization of these recent artificial surfaces, focusing on the assessment of quantitative details (land consumption surface, density, population, etc.) and qualitative features (morphologies, landscape impact, etc.). The methodological approach is based on graphic and statistical analysis. On the one hand, starting by first identifying artificial areas by comparing satellite imagery (source: the European project Corine Land Cover – 1990, 2000 and 2006). It is possible then, to study in detail the new developments thanks to the aerial photographs (1993, 2002 and 2008). On the other hand, the vari...
Urban Evolution of a Mediterranean Region through GIS Data
joan carles membrado
This paper investigates the international retirement migration from elderly northern Europeans into Spain and its influence on expansion of urban sprawl there. Key themes analyzed in this paper include the urban sprawl expansion during the Spanish housing bubble, and the link between lifestyle migrants and urban sprawl development. This paper considers the reasons for moving to Spain, which are chiefly related with the climate and lifestyle. It also explores the benefits and drawbacks of these en masse lifestyle migration and the environmental and landscape impacts on Mediterranean Spain. In order to visualize better this international migration we have created some GIS maps from a GIS project (CORINE Land Cover) dataset or from the official Spanish Census data. The map design program used to create the maps in this paper has been ArcGIS by ESRI
